December 2015 Athlete’s of the Month for MAR Club
Mariah Marsh (Senior) - Girls’ Girls Hockey:
The MAR Club Female Athlete of the Month for December is Mariah Marsh, Senior Girls Hockey. Mariah’s coach, Dewitt Mack, nominated her and noted her accomplishments:
“Mariah had a great month of December. She is leading the team in total points with 14 (tied for 13th in the state), including eight assists (7th in the state). She has also won about 75 percent of all face-offs she has taken. Her contributions on the ice have helped lead us to a 4-2 conference record and she contributed to a significant win for the Mandan Girls’ Hockey program when we beat the Grand Forks Girls’ All-Star team for the first time ever.
Mariah is also one of our leaders both on and off the ice. As a captain she is the leader on the ice, both during practice and during games. Off the ice, she is a team leader while preparing for practice and when traveling in coordinating the team with game preparation.
Mariah has started the year with enthusiasm and we expect a great rest of the year from her.”
Reed Bergman (Junior) - Boys’ Swimming & Diving:
There was a tie for MAR Club Male Athlete of the Month for December – Reed Bergman, Junior, Boys’ Swimming & Diving and Dale Spillman, Junior, Boys’ Wrestling.
Coach Ralph Manly nominated Reed and noted his accomplishments in December:
“Reed had an outstanding month of December for the team. The Braves had three competitions during the month. The first was the Bismarck/Legacy Double Dual. Reed had seven 1st-place finishes (100yd Butterfly against BHS and LHS, 100yd Backstroke against LHS, 200yd Medley Relay against BHS and LHS, 400yd Freestyle Relay against BHS and LHS) and one 2nd-place finish (100yd Backstroke against BHS). During the Bismarck Invite Reed swam to a 4th-place finish in the 200yd Individual Medley and 1st place in the 100yd Backstroke. In Relays, he participated in a 4th-place finish in the 200yd Medley Relay and 4th place in the 400yd Freestyle Relay. Great swimming for a nine-team invite! The Mandan Pentathlon was December 31. Each swimmer swims five events. Reed placed 7th in the 100 Butterfly, 2nd in the 100 Backstroke, 12th in the 100 Breaststroke, 3rd in the 100 Freestyle and 3rd in the 50 Freestyle. Reed is truly an all-around swimmer! Overall, Reed had eight 1st-place finishes in the month. To date, Reed is State Qualified in six of eight swimming events, with our main season coming in to view quickly.”
Dale Spillman (Junior) - Boys’ Wrestling:
Coach Luke Mellmer nominated Dale and noted his wrestling accomplishments:
“Dale so far this season is currently ranked #2 in the state at 182 pounds. His record thus far is 15-0 with 10 pins, 1 Major Decision, and 3 Decisions. Dale has been a real motivator this season. Whether it is in the classroom as an honor-roll student, in the wrestling room as a team captain, or at the competition as the only undefeated wrestler, Dale is a leader. With the Bismarck Rotary as our next tournament, Dale will be put to the test as he will have the opportunity to capture the #1 ranking in the state!”
Other athletes nominated for December were: Trae Steckler, Sophomore, Boys’ Basketball; Garrett Murphy, Senior, Boys’ Hockey; Hannah Hanson, Senior, Girls’ Basketball; Mackensi Higlin, Junior, Girls’ Basketball; Olivia Lacher, Freshman, Gymnastics; Amber Morrell, Senior, Kachinas Dance Team; and Samantha Power, Junior, Kachinas Dance Team.

MHS Athletic Donations MAR Club Supports MHS athletics
One of the fantastic things about being part of MAR Club is seeing our efforts pay off….which has happened again. Each year the MAR Club makes a monetary donation to the Mandan High School athletic department to supplement their budget to help student athletes. The efforts of the MAR Club results in an average donation of $30,000 to MHS activities. The following is a list of supplies/equipment/uniforms that the Athletic Department purchased in-part with the donation from the MAR Club for the 2010-11 school year. This donation was made possible with the generous support of the super boosters, patrons that purchased clothing, and the revenue generated through volunteer workers for NDHSAA tournaments hosted by the Mandan High School Athletic Department.
MAR Club Purchases
Every year the MAR Club helps purchase several needed items for Mandan activities that benefit both students and the fans.
The Mandan Athletic Department would like to thank the MAR CLUB for their annual donation on behalf of students and coaches. The annual donation makes it possible for the Mandan Athletic Department to make general purchases throughout the course of the year, with the help of the head coaches of each athletic program. This is the first year that the MAR Club has been able to donate $35,000 and in the past 7 years, the MAR CLUB has donated $187,000 to the Athletic Department. Please see in the picture above, MAR CLUB board member, Karla Zander presenting a check to Mandan Athletic Director, Lorell Jungling between the girls and boys Varsity basketball games against St. Mary’s.
