IN-DISTRICT TRANSFER

In-District Transfer Requests should be used when a family lives in Mandan but wants their child to attend an MPS Elementary School other than the attendance area in which they live.

In-District Transfer Expectations:

Requests will be considered on a space available basis in accord with the following procedures:

1. In determining whether space is available, class size and the composition of the class(es) affected will be considered. A transfer request should not result in a class size more than 23 at the K-2 level or more than 25 at the 3-5 level.

2. Transfer requests received after the start of the school year will not be acted upon until the end of the next reporting period.

3. Transfer requests which are approved, will be in effect until the child would normally change schools (e.g. from elementary to middle school). If a child would like to move back to the elementary school in their own attendance area, a new transfer request would need to be completed.

4. Parents who change their residence from one school attendance area to another during the school year will ordinarily transfer their student(s) into the elementary school in their attendance area at the time they change their residence. However, the parents, at the time of changing their residence, may request their children remain in that school for the balance of the trimester or the balance of the school year. Request will be granted on availability of space and class sizes.

5. If the request is granted, transportation will not be the responsibility of the Mandan Public School District.

OPEN ENROLLMENT

Open Enrollment Requests should be used by a family who does not live in the Mandan School District, but who want to attend school in Mandan.

State law governs open enrollment procedures (North Dakota Century Code 15.1-31). By February 28th of the school year preceding the year of enrollment, a parent who wished to enroll a student, shall file an application for approval with the admitting school district.

If a student changes residences after March 1st, they can apply for open enrollment, seeking a deadline waiver, within 30 days of the move.

Once enrolled in as admitting district, the student must remain enrolled until:

  • The student graduates
  • The student relocates to another district
  • The parents apply for open enrollment in another school district
  • The parent notifies the resident school district that the student will return the following year
